Anti-Aging Foods

Globally we spend billions each year on anti-aging products, major and minor cosmetic procedures and a variety of supplements hoping to look younger. And understandably so, who wouldn’t want to keep their youthfulness as long as we possibly can!?!

A number of drugs have been worked on but the search for longevity has proven to be tricky. Whilst medical researchers are working on a “magic pill”, let’s look into what we can eat to try and delay what many people are fearful of – visible signs of aging. Not only can it help us look younger but also feel better, increase energy, improve sleep and, in turn, give us a better mindset.

Here are some superfoods and their health benefits:

  • Blueberries

Blueberries contain specific flavonoid (a type of antioxidant) molecules that fight DNA damage and slow age-related damage to brain cells. It also contains over 13.000 antioxidants including vitamin C, which promotes collagen production, helps skin healing processes and protects skin cells from UV damage caused by sun exposure.

What are antioxidants? In simple terms, an antioxidant is a chemical compound that protects cells against the effects of free radicals (molecules produced when the body breaks down food or is exposed to pollutants such as tobacco smoke or radiation), and may help to reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease and reduce premature aging.

  • Almonds

Almonds are known to contain energising protein, fibre and healthy fats. They are also high in B vitamins (riboflavin and niacin) and zinc, which contribute to the maintenance of healthy skin, and are rich in vitamin E – an antioxidant nutrient that may help neutralise damaging free radicals in the body and is often used in skin health products.

  • Grapes

One of the best fruits for slowing down the aging process, the skin on red grapes is high in resveratrol, an anti-inflammatory that helps keep skin looking flawless. This antioxidant also boosts collagen production in the retina, protecting age-related degeneration. Filled with Vitamin C and antioxidants, grapes can help to revitalise your skin.

  • Avocados

Avocado is a unique fruit and known for its high nutrient value. Eat four times a week for younger-looking skin, hair and nails. It has 25 vital nutrients and antioxidants, including five anti-inflammatories.

  • Spinach

Spinach’s main active ingredients for anti-aging include magnesium and the plant-based heme iron. Spinach contains a significant percentage of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E and B6. Many of the nutrients have been proven in scientific studies to help tighten skin, lower blood pressure, improve the immune system and reduce the risk of brain disorders.

As well as consuming superfoods, it is vital to remember to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water, learn to breath properly, walk and exercise regularly to increase blood flow for a healthy glow.

It is important to note that whilst anti-aging products help to reduce the appearance of tired, dull skin and fine lines, looking after our bodies on the inside will have a longer term effect on both our physical appearance and our mental well-being; and a combination of both internal and external can help us achieve results we all desire.
